HeadStart Mental Health Promotion Programme

activeNewham is running wellbeing sessions all throughout the summer and autumn in 2017.

The programme is committed to the delivery of evidence-based approaches, which promotes resilience and confidence in 10-16 year olds. The 18 month programme which is funded by the Big Lottery, will see activeNewham work in partnership with Fight For Peace, YMCAfit, Ambition, Aspire, Achieve, StreetGames, East London NHS, and many more to provide a range of high quality progressive sports activities across the borough. All sessions are completely free of charge for young people and take place at community venues throughout the borough of Newham.

Parkour / Freerunning is a non-competitive physical discipline of training to move freely over and through any terrain using only the abilities of the body, principally through running, jumping, climbing and quadrupedal movement. It focuses on developing the fundamental attributes required for such movement, which include functional strength and fitness, balance, spatial awareness, agility, coordination, precision, control and creative vision. Come and give it a go today and receive the possibility of completing a Parkour Activators qualification following the programme.

Fight for Peace are Newham’s premier Martial Arts organisation, partnered with activeNewham’s HeadStart to provide an 8 week beginners programme of Judo for young people aged 10 – 16. Originating in Japan, Judo develops physical and mental energy which allows you to control emotions and impulses whilst developing yourself and improving fitness. The beginners programme is designed to teach you the techniques needed to develop your skills and take part in a competitive Judo match against an opponent. Learn about grip, foot placement, and develop knowledge on how to outwit your opponent whilst developing your own creativity and building resilience.

Urban Golf
Urban Golf changes the way you think about Golf. Swap the Greens and fairways for parks and streets and take on the new style of play as you navigate the urban terrain, chipping, driving, and putting your way through the environment you live in. Urban golf will test your drive, ambition, and resilience as you score your way through East London, across East Ham park, Stratford Park, and the Olympic park.

Want to learn the Art of Boxing? Fight for Peace are deliver an 8 week programme with the Preliminary Award being your first step to learning the art of Amateur Boxing. You will be taught your stance, guard, footwork, straight punches to head and body and how to defend yourself. Continue the Boxing pathway with our Boxing Tutors award where the aim of the Course is to qualify participants to run the Non-Contact Boxing Awards in schools, colleges, community sports projects, boxing clubs, universities, youth centres and Sports Centres. Lunge, Parry, Riposte! Fencing provides a unique mix of physical, intellectual and emotional stimulation. Want to improve coordination, concentration, endurance and cardiovascular fitness? then come along to our Fencing sessions and learn the ancient art of swordsmanship which draws its origins from as early as the 12th century. During the programme you’ll learn the moves needed to beat your opponent whilst improving flexibility, resilience, and reflexes. Following the programme there is the opportunity to undertake a Fencing Leaders award with British Fencing.

Female Boxing
Female boxing is a beginners programme delivered by Fight for Peace, specifically for girls who want to be involved in the sport of Boxing. Designed to help females develop in the sport, and delivered by a female boxing coach, the programme focuses on punches, guard, agility, and fitness flexibility. Multi Sports
An abundance of sports, team building sessions, and the opportunity to deliver a sporting themed community initiative chosen by participants, the Multisports course has it all! With sports ranging from basketball to orienteering and rock climbing, participants will get the chance to develop themselves in a variety of activities and finish the programme with a celebration day to include friends and family. Give something back to the community with this amazing 10 week programme.

Fitness and Physical Activity Award – Registration Only

Thinking about a career in the sports and leisure industry? Want to learn more about Health and Wellbeing through exercise and share it with others? YMCAfit are here to deliver an Award in Fitness and Physical Activity in partnership with activeNewham and Atherton leisure centre. The 14 week programme will give you all the necessary skills and abilities to assist in an exercise or fitness environment. With theory sessions around anatomy and physiology and the role of a fitness instructor, alongside practical based sessions shadowing in a gym environment, you’ll learn about what it takes to be a fitness professional and gain hands on experience with the help of a qualified personal trainer.

The award in fitness and physical activity programme is Registration only so places will be allocated to young people on a first come first serve basis. Sign Up for the programme is for young people aged 13+ and registration forms must be completed before a place can be offered. There are only 10 places available on this course and confirmation of full attendance is required prior to being accepted onto the course.

Your Choice

Are you aged 10 – 16? Attend a school within Newham or live in the Borough? activeNewham would like your thoughts on what sport you would like to be available in the April – July period. We have funding set aside for young people to decide exactly what kind of sport they would like to try and where they want to try it within the borough. Examples could include Archery, Badminton, Boccia, Dodgeball, Frisbee, Hockey, Tag Rugby, Slyding and many more. This could be in any of the local parks, the Olympic park, or maybe one of the activeNewham leisure centres in the area.

The choice is up to the young people of Newham! To register your choice please send an email to craig.hughes@activeNewham.org.uk, or message to 07741 293510, including your Name, Age, and School, along with what sport you would like to try and where you would like it to take place. Then in March we will announce the chosen sport and area. Remember… It will be completely free to attend!


Parkour UK & Free your Instinct – Parkour & leaders course

Parkour, or free running is a discipline, a physical art, a way of life and a sport. Want to become a Parkour Leader? ActiveNewham have teamed up with Parkour UK and Free Your Instinct to deliver a Parkour level 1 Activators course for young people. The 24 week free running programme will teach you the importance of balance, stability, control, focus and creativity on the environments outdoor apparatus. During the programme you’ll undertake Unit work on the basics of parkour, understanding the overall development and art of the sport, followed by an activators course that will cover all you need to know about facilitating a parkour session. Successful achievement of the qualification will enable activators to organise and facilitate Parkour/Free running activities. Join the Parkour programme today to ensure you don’t miss out!

British Fencing – Leadership through Fencing

With the Senior Team finishing 3rd in the London Youth Games the young people of Newham are setting the benchmark high for Fencing in the community. Now is your chance to get involved and be a part of the sport. Designed for young people aged 14+, the half day course uses Fencing as a way to positively engage and improve leadership skills, self-confidence and self-esteem, equipping you with the skills to facilitate a fencing session. With a practical and theory based side to the activity you'll learn from one of British Fencing’s programme tutors and could be chosen to assist in an upcoming fencing programme in September. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to get yourself involved in sports and an opportunity to gain delivery experience.
