Newham Leisure Centre has reopened to the public
Newham Leisure Centre has reopened at 3.00pm this afternoon, and we are offering a full service of classes and activities. We look forward to welcoming our customers back to the centre.

activeNewham have been cooperating with the request from the London Metropolitan Police, the Health and Safety Executive and London Borough of Newham and we were requested to remain closed during the onsite investigation, as this has concluded we have now fully re-opened the leisure centre.

With regards to the tragic events which took place on Tuesday 11 July, whilst these took place within the Newham Leisure Centre grounds, the area that this took place has been surrendered to the London 2017 World Athletics Championship. While the investigation into the events takes place we will continue to operate the main Leisure Centre.

activeNewham statement regarding incident at Newham Leisure Centre
activeNewham joins with International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to express sadness at the death of Para athlete Abdullah Hayayei following a training ground incident this evening (11 July) at Newham Leisure Centre.
 
Emergency services were called shortly after 17:00 to reports of a seriously injured man. Police, London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended the scene.  At 17:20 the athlete was pronounced dead at the scene.
 
The athlete’s family who are in the UAE have been informed of his death and the UAE team were brought together at the team hotel to be informed of the tragic news.
 
Ian Gallagher, Managing Director activeNewham said: “Our thoughts are with the Abdullah Hayayei family at this time.  We want to assure both staff and customers that we are committed to deliver services and activities to get people in Newham more active, more often and this incident only strengthens our resolve to do this.”
 
Police officers remain at the scene and cordons are in place.  The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have been informed.
Last September, Hayayei made his Paralympic debut at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.  He finished sixth in the javelin F34 and seventh in shot put F34.
 
London 2017 was to be Hayayei’s second World Championships. At the 2015 event in Doha, Qatar, he finished fifth in the discus F34 and eighth in shot put F34.  He was set to compete in the shot put, discus and javelin F34 events.
 
During Friday’s Opening Ceremony at the London Stadium a moment of silence will be held in honour of Hayayei’s death.
The IPC and the London 2017 Organising Committee will stage a press conference on Wednesday (12 July) at the Upper Welcome Zone at the Aquatics Centre in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park at 10:00am.

London Youth Games Finals Weekend
This weekend saw the culmination of eight months of sporting competition where Newham’s young people have represented Newham in sports from Cross Country to fencing.

The finals weekend was at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre and Newham competed in basketball, football, weightlifting, athletics, indoor rowing and swimming.

The basketball team were competing in the semi - finals having qualified from the earlier rounds back in June. Both teams sailed into the final with convincing wins, the female team winning 18-12 against Hackney and the male team beating Southwark 28-24.

Both finals were contested against Haringey with the female team going first.  The girls fought hard but just ran out of steam and lost the final 20 points to 13.  The male team was next and in an exciting final they managed to stay ahead and win the final 36-33 and bring the trophy back to Newham for the first time. This was a fantastic end to day one of the finals.
It was also swimming on Saturday and Newham won a gold medal in the female 50m breaststroke.

On day two Newham continued to win medals, starting off in the Weightlifting where the Newham weightlifter winning silver in the male competition lifting 76k in the snatch and 96 in the jerk.

Newham were also successful in the Indoor Rowing with the year 7 and 8 boys each receiving a bronze medal. In athletics, the female relay team came second and also picked up an individual bronze medal in the female long jump.

Les Mills launching at Newham Leisure Centre in April
For those of you who have participated in a Les Mills class at Atherton or Balaam Leisure Centre, you will know how much of an exhilarating and rewarding workout it is! So Tuesday 18 April is the day that Les Mills will be launching at Newham Leisure Centre for the first time. You can now enjoy BODYPUMP, BODYBALANCE and BODYATTACK classes at Newham.

Yoga classes are coming to Manor Park!
As of Tuesday 21 March, Manor Park Fitness Centre customers will be able to take part and enjoy yoga classes at the fitness centre. The classes will be ran by Yasmine and held every Tuesday at 11.30am - 12.30pm and Wednesday at 7.15pm - 8.15pm.

activeNewham announce large refurbishments at Newham LC! 
activeNewham are excited to announce £150,000 of works to the sports hall at Newham Leisure Centre that will begin in March. The refurbishment will see the installation of a brand new floor, new courts for volleyball and the launch of the world renowned fitness regimen CrossFit! The sports hall will reopen on Monday 3 April.

activeNewham announce partnership with HeadStart!

activeNewham is pleased to announce that we will be working with Newham's HeadStart Mental Health Promotion Programme which is committed to the delivery of evidence based approaches which promotes emotional resilience in 10-16 year olds with emerging mental health conditions.   

A full programme of activities will launch from April 2017 but we will be running a number of taster sessions for young people to come along and try out the activities.

Competition Winners!
Last month Atherton Leisure Centre held an in house membership challenge. The task was to see how many times a tyre could be flipped in 1 minute. The prize on offer was a month’s free membership to the champion boy and girl. 
A massive congratulations to Antonia & Leontin who were our January champions! These two certainly are smashing their fitness goals already in 2017.

London Sports Awards announcement
activeNewham are delighted to announce they have been shortlisted for three awards!
The London Sports Awards will take place on 19 January 2017 and activeNewham have been nominated for a total of three different awards. The London Sports Awards places grassroots sport at the heart of all that is good and unique about London, bringing together an array of coaches, volunteers, clubs, investors, elite sport events and participants to celebrate their sporting achievements. The categories that activeNewham have been shortlisted for are:

Harnessing the Power of Elite Sport – Roll on Rio (via joint application with the LLDC)

You can vote for Newham City Farm at your local Tesco Store!

MACE Volunteers Week 
This project has been running from 5 September - 16 September 2016    

MACE are working in partnership with activeNewham and the London Borough of Newham to undertake a “DIY SOS BIG BUILD” project in Stratford Park.This project has seen large businesses and the local community working together to rejuvenate the area. Staff from Westfield, the Financial Conduct Authority as well as young offenders from Newham’s Youth Offending Team have all been willing to get their hands dirty to help. The work will see improvements benefitting a local project which supports adults with mental health needs and children who have special educational needs.

The Health Suite at East Ham opens!
activeNewham are pleased to announce that the much anticipated health suite at East Ham Leisure Centre has finally opened and is ready for use!
The final work on the brand new health suite at East Ham was completed and the centre officially opened on the 14th September 2016. The new health suite includes a state-of-the-art sauna and steam room.

Newham and Essex Beagles youngster makes World final
Finette Agyapong produced a sparkling display in the 200m at the World under-20 Championships.
19-year-old Finette came close to beating her personal best time in the initial 200m heat in Poland,
before finishing fourth in the semi-finals.
She went on to finish in seventh place in the final, with an impressive display. The Newham
youngster has been coached by activeNewham team member Coral Nourrice ever since she was 14.
Coral believes it may only be a matter of time before we see Finette on the grand stage!

Les Mills Born to Move classes are coming to Atherton! 
We are excited to announce that the popular Les Mills classes will be adding a children's programme to the schedule at Atherton leisure centre.
Parents of children aged 4 and over can now bring their children to the 30 minute engaging class that aims to help children lead a more active and fun lifestyle. 25 children from St Antony's School were invited to come along and try a class and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Brand new East Ham health suite - coming soon!
We are pleased to announce that work is about to get underway to install a brand new health suite at the East Ham leisure centre.
