Balaam Leisure Centre Consultation

Newham Council wants residents help to decide and shape the future of Balaam Leisure Centre in Plaistow.

Balaam Leisure Centre has been closed since December 2018 following the discovery of a serious water leak through the concrete pool tank which also forms the ceiling of the basement gym. This made the structure unsafe and the council was forced to close the centre.

The structure has now undergone specialist testing and the results have been received and evaluated. These results have been used to develop a range of options for the future of the centre, and now the council wants residents and users to give their views on what should happen next.

For more information on these options and the consultation, please see Newham Coucil's website HERE .

Due to essential maintenance works, Balaam Leisure Centre is currently shut until further notice. Members can use other sites whilst these works are carried out. We're sorry for any inconvenience caused during this time.

Update - 25.7.19

The structure has now undergone specialist testing and the results have been received and evaluated.

The Centre will remain closed while the Council develops a range of options for decision makers to consider with regard to the future of the centre.

The options may include the potential for alternative leisure provision.
We will consult with local residents and centre users on those options ahead of a meeting of the Cabinet in the autumn.

We apologise for the length of time it’s taken to bring you this update, but unfortunately the testing and reporting process took longer than expected.
Users of the Balaam Leisure Centre are reminded they can use facilities at Atherton, East Ham and Newham Leisure Centres at no extra cost.

Steps have been taken to protect the site from unauthorised access but this is solely for security purposes.

No decision about the future of the Centre has been taken.

UPDATE - 11.03.19

It is with regret that we can today confirm that Balaam Leisure will not be reopening to the public during April 2019. The site will remain closed until all of the necessary survey and assessment works are completed. There is thought to be a very serious structural problem with the fabric of the building, which makes it unsafe for building users and staff. The survey and assessment work is complex and it will take time to complete a thorough investigation and evaluation. Once the investigation is complete we will be in the best possible position to give proper consideration to all future options, which will allow us to make properly informed decisions about the best way forward. This matter is being given the highest priority by both activeNewham and the London Borough of Newham but unfortunately it is likely the centre is facing a period of prolonged closure. Balaam Leisure Centre customers are being contacted (From Monday March 11) to discuss options to transfer their memberships, custom and usage to other activeNewham facilities. If you have any queries, please contact our Call Centre on 0300 124 0123 .

Canning Town Classes Update - 21.3.19

Due to lack of attendance since the beginning of these classes in January, it has been decided by both activeNewham and London Borough of Newham that the Group Exercise classes at Canning Town Community Neighbourhood Centre will be coming to an end on Sunday 31 st March.

Alternative classes can be found in the area at the following locations:

·         Atherton Leisure Centre - 189 Romford Rd, London E15 4JF

·         East Ham Leisure Centre - 324 Barking Rd, London E6 2RT

·         Newham Leisure Centre - 281 Prince Regent Ln, London E13 8SD

Balaam is currently closed to the public due to a very serious structural problem with the fabric of the building and will remain closed until all the necessary survey and assessment works are completed. Once the works are completed, we will be in the best possible position to give proper consideration to the future options, which will allow us to make properly informed decisions going forward.

We’d like to thank all customers for their ongoing understanding regarding the closure and for the inconvenience caused during this time.
