Swimming is one of the easiest, safest forms of exercise for children of all abilities and school swimming is an effective way of teaching children how to be safe in and around water. Additionally, it is one of the most accessible forms of exercise in terms of age, weight and physical ability, making it an incredibly inclusive sport for children to take part in.
For many children, school swimming lessons are their first introduction to the aquatic environment – with drowning currently the third most common cause of death of children in England – swimming lessons delivered through schools are an important way to help keep children safe.
The National Curriculum states:
“All schools must provide swimming instruction either in Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2. In particular, pupils should be taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, using a range of strokes effectively such as front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.”
We believe that swimming lessons should not only teach children the key skills they need to stay safe in the water, but should also be fun and inspire children to swim more often and stay fit and healthy. To support your school to achieve curriculum targets, activeNewham offers a variety of options for booking swimming lessons, including 30, 45 or 60 minute lesson options, as well as intensive crash courses.
