Swimming is a healthy activity for all ages and abilities. As well as being fun, swimming is a great way to keep fit and stay active, and it is an activity that you can enjoy throughout your life - whatever your age.This is why, in partnership with Newham Council, we offer free swimming sessions to all Newham residents over the age of 60 and under the age of 16. Swimming is an important life skill which is why we offer a wide range of lessons for people of all ages.We have some of the best facilities in London, with large swimming pools and smaller teaching pools at our centres. Our adult swimming lessons cater for adults aged 16 and over. All swimmers follow the National Plan for Teaching Swimming, progressing from basic water confidence to competitive swimming standard. All lessons are led by qualified instructors and delivered in a safe environment and are suited to swimmers needs. There are three levels of adult swimming lessons: 1. Beginner: Suitable for adults who are not confident in the water and who cannot swim more than 10 metres unaided on their front and backs. 2. Intermediate: Suitable for adults who are water confident and can confidently swim 10 metres on their front and backs using basic swimming techniques. 3. Our swimming lessons follow the National Plan for Teaching Swimming Stages 1-10, one of the most successful programmes of its kind. Children ages five to 1 receive the best possible instruction from qualified swimming instructors who develop each child’s core range of skills to progress them from basic water confidence through to competitive swimming. All lessons are delivered in a fun and safe environment to suit the youngster’s needs and abilities. Stages are as follows: Ducklings - For children aged 3.5 and over. A perfect chance to introduce toddlers to the water and prepare them for stage 1. Stage 1 – For children age 5 and over, non or weak swimmers unable to swim 5 meters on front and back without a floatation aid. Stage 2 – For children age 5 and over, confident moving around in water but still non or weak swimmers and unable to swim 5 meters on front and back without a floatation aid. Stage 3 – For children who have passed stage 2 or able to travel 5 meters on front and back with the use of aids, able to regain standing and blow bubbles into the water. Stage 4 – For children who have passed stage 3 or able to travel 10 meters on front and back unaided with a basic technique, and are confident to jump in. Stage 5 – For children who have passed stage 4 or able to kick 10 meters of front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly and swim 10 meters of a stroke. Stage 6 – For children who have passed stage 5 or able to swim 10 meters of front crawl, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly, all with good technique and are able to confidently tread water and perform somersaults backwards and forwards. Stage 7 – For children who have passed stage 6 or able to swim 25 meters of one stroke with correct technique and 10 meters of the other 3 strokes with correct technique. Should be able to surface dive to the bottom of the pool, and swim confidently with clothes on. Stage 8 – Competitive swimming, Rookie lifesaving, mini polo, Synchro (Aquafun), diving and bronze challenge. Stage 9 - Competitive swimming, Rookie lifesaving, mini polo, Synchro (Aquafun), diving and silver challenge. Stage 10 – Competitive swimming, Rookie lifesaving, mini polo, Synchro (Aquafun), diving and gold challenge. Adult & Child - Parents can come and learn to swim with children above the age of 6 months.
Our swimming lessons are specifically designed for children aged 8-16 with complex and special educational needs. Swimmers are taught in small groups with a higher teacher to child ratio than in standard swimming lessons to ensure that every youngster reaches their full potential. Whether you want to improve your swimming or just splash about with family and friends, everyone is welcome. Qualified lifeguards, swimming instructors and volunteers are on hand throughout the sessions, both in and out of the water, providing a fun, safe and welcoming environment. Swimming is a great way for families to have fun together. Being in the water helps us to be more active and stay healthy and is also a great way to unwind and have lots of fun. At each of the leisure centres we offer fun swimming sessions on Saturday and Sunday, and on every day of the school holidays. These sessions are aimed at families and we provide exciting inflatable play areas and lots of toys and floats to make the sessions great fun for all ages.

You can book your place in advance at our Fun Swimming sessions at the 4 leisure centres. This will avoid the need for you and your family to queue and will guarantee that you have a place at these very popular swimming sessions.This will include the regular Fun Swimming sessions that take place every weekend as well as the special sessions that we provide during the school holidays.
Booking a fun swimming session is now much simpler. Please follow these easy steps. 1. You will need to register with activeNewham by following this LINK . We will then send you your activeNewham card which you will need to use every time you come to a leisure centre for a swim.2. If you live in Newham your card will be FREE of charge. Customers who live outside Newham will be charged £60 for the card.3. The amount you pay for your swimming session will depend on the type of membership that you have with activeNewham. Details are given in the table below.4. You can book your session using the online booking portal* or by calling the Customer Service Centre on 0300 124 0123 5. To guarantee your space we ask that sessions be paid for in advance. This can be done by either debit or credit card online or by calling the Customer Service Centre on 0300 124 0123 6. Under 8’s must be accompanied by a competent adult swimmer (over 16yrs old and recommended that they be able to swim at least 25 meters).No more than two under 8’s to each competent adult swimmer.The competent adult swimmer must actively supervise the under 8’sWeak/non swimmers, under 8’s, must be actively supervised in the water, all non-swimmers must remain in shallow water, and are not permitted past the relevant mark on poolside situated at a depth of 1.2m. This includes anyone wearing armbands or using other swimming aids, as well as adults who are weak or non-swimmers.Young people aged between 9 – 16 years must show that they are able to competently swim 25 meters before they are allowed to swim outside the shallow water area.Young people who have demonstrated they are able to swim 25 meters must wear the wristband given to them at all times.It is strongly recommended that under 8’s and all non-swimmers wear armbands and /or another appropriate type of buoyancy aid.Non swimmers over the age of 16 are recommended to be accompanied in the water by a competent adult swimmer.
